Successful site visit to Capul, Philippines
Date
The Inyanga Marine Energy Group team recently travelled to the remote off-grid island of Capul in the Philippines to visit the site of the planned HydroWing tidal energy installation. This will be the first ever tidal power generation plant in Southeast Asia and has created great interest and excitement in the region. Inyanga Marine Energy Group won the competitive tender for the contract with Energies PH, Inc affiliate San Bernardino Ocean Power Corporation.
Capul is situated on the San Bernadino Strait, which is an excellent location for the project. Strong tidal currents are found in straits which join two sea areas where different tidal activities happen at the two ends. The San Bernardino strait has powerful currents flowing from the Samar Sea and the Philippine Sea and is well-known for the strength of its tidal flows. The first stage of the project consists of a tidal power plant to be connected into a microgrid network coupled with Solar PV and energy storage, delivering a reliable, sustainable, and cost-competitive alternative to fossil-based power generation. It is expected that the project will deploy in late 2025.
The Inyanga team will shortly return to Capul to take precise measurements of the currents and conduct a thorough assessment of the tidal energy resources at this location.
